I actually enjoyed it. You are very enthusiastic about the subject and it shows through. I even understood most of it as a layman. About the only honest criticism I can give you is you say “uh” a lot; something I am sure you’ve heard.
All in all, excellent job. You kept me interested, and I actually learned something.
Thanks, Adam! I’ll keep working on the “uh”‘s. 🙂 Glad it was informative!
In phylogenetics, it’s not really appropriate to use the term “basal” like you did in your first set of slides. All the branches on a tree have been evolving for the same amount of time, so just because a branch has the oldest most recent common ancestor to the rest of the branches does not mean that that group reflects any more about the ancestor than any other group. By chance, it may happen to be that this is sometimes true, but the tree itself does not tell you that.
Thanks for the correction! Is there a more accurate term to use then?
Probably the best thing to do is speak in terms of things being either more or less recently diverged. Sorry to be so nitpicky, but I thought you might like to know since you went to the trouble of putting these presentations up here.
Thanks! I appreciate that you’re being “nitpicky”. I don’t want to be sharing incorrect information!
